Metadata Analysis

Also known as:EXIF Analysis

Metadata Analysis: Examining descriptive data embedded in files that reveals origin, tooling, and people. It is a standard discipline in open source intelligenceOpen Source IntelligenceGathering and analyzing publicly available information for security assessments. and in forensics.

How it works and where it fits

Almost every file format carries fields that are not part of the visible content. Images hold EXIF, IPTC, and XMP data with camera model, capture time, editing software, and sometimes GPS coordinates. Office documents and PDFs store author, organisation, editing duration, template paths, and comment history. Compiled artifacts carry metadata too: timestamps, paths to symbol files, and build environments that expose usernames and internal directory structures.

Practical security relevance

For attackers, metadata is a productive source for reconnaissanceReconnaissanceCollection of information regarding targets, systems, individuals, and attack surfaces.: username conventions, software versions in use, internal server paths. For defenders it matters twice over — as a data leakage risk in published files and as evidence in investigations. Organisationally, stripping metadata belongs in the release process before any publication; technically it is best automated at the point of egress.
